Why I Ditched My Morning Routine
And why you might want to do it too...
I used to procrastinate the first hour of every morning.
It was frustrating.
However, it wasn’t the kind of procrastination you’d think of:
Scrolling down social media
Watching YouTube videos
Eating a peanut butter sandwich
No.
Instead, I was procrastinating through my ‘optimized’ morning routine:
Wim Hof Breathing
Going for a walk
Cold shower
Meditation
Stretching
Journaling
Pushups
It would take me a full hour before I would get to work.
However, I would always have trouble getting focused on my tasks.
Then, I watched this video by Rian Doris:
That blew my mind.
I was doing it all wrong.
Here’s Rian’s simple strategy:
Upon waking up, aim to start working within 60 to 90 seconds, while you’re still in a half-asleep state. Engage in your highest priority work without delay.
I’ve been doing this for a month now and it works like a charm.
The reason this works is because when we wake up, our brain waves are similar to those when we experience flow.
If we do an extensive morning routine first, we lose this state.
Instead, use the classic morning routine habits as a recovery activity after your first working session.
2 important details:
1. Push Through
I’ll push through the initial struggle to allow myself to enter a flow state. Usually takes about 5-15 minutes.
2. Recover
After my flow block of about 1-2 hours, I’ll transition to recovery activities. These are your classic morning routine activities.
For me, it’s usually 2 or more of the following:
Going for a walk or bike ride
Cold shower
Stretching
Journaling
After these recovery activities, I’ll go back to work.
So, if you’re curious…
Try it.
Let me know if it works for you.
